On the 16th of April each year, we in Jordan celebrate Flag Day—a day on which we renew our sense of belonging and loyalty, and reflect on the symbolism of the Jordanian flag, which has united hearts, inspired generations, and embodied the values of sacrifice, devotion, and national identity.
On this cherished national occasion, SIGI reaffirms the significance of the flag as a symbol of sovereignty, dignity, and freedom. We emphasize the importance of promoting the values of citizenship, equality, and participation—values that the Jordanian flag represents on every occasion, stemming from deeply rooted human rights principles that endure for the land and its people.
In this context, we proudly raise our heads in honor of the nation’s banner, which has flown high in the sky of glory, carrying in its colors the story of our ancestors’ struggles and the dignity of a people who have remained steadfast in the face of all challenges—loyal and united, preserving a strong national fabric regardless of origins or backgrounds.
The Story of the Jordanian Flag
The Jordanian flag was not born by coincidence, but is an extension of the flag of the Great Arab Revolt, which began in 1916 under the leadership of Sharif Hussein bin Ali, in a movement that aimed to liberate the Arab nation under one banner—one that has long been the dream of every Arab.
With the establishment of the Emirate of Transjordan in 1921, this flag, in its now-familiar design, was officially adopted. Following independence in 1946, it became the official banner of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, bearing within its elements historical symbols and deep meanings connected to the country’s heritage and struggle.
The flag consists of three horizontal stripes (black, white, and green) and a red triangle containing a white seven-pointed star. Each color holds deep symbolic significance as part of the greater Arab context, while the seven-pointed star represents the seven verses of the opening chapter of the Holy Quran (Al-Fatiha), as well as the values of the Arab Revolt—unity, justice, and freedom.
SIGI: The Flag Is a Symbol of Responsibility for All — National Security and Stability Must Be Preserved
On this national day, SIGI renews its call to all components of Jordanian society—official and civil institutions, civil society organizations, and individuals, both men and women, youth and young women—to uphold the core values of the Jordanian state, strengthen the spirit of belonging, and work to solidify the principles of democracy, justice, equality, and the rule of law.
SIGI affirms the importance of building a participatory democratic society in which women and youth are at the heart of development and decision-making—being the driving force and the true guarantee for Jordan’s future, and a cornerstone of its security and stability.
In light of recent events in the Kingdom involving the foiling of plots aimed at undermining the nation’s security and unity, we at SIGI reaffirm our deep commitment to Jordan: a homeland that will not tolerate tampering, a people who will not compromise their security or nation, and a wise leadership that has always sought a safe, stable, and secure society.
We express our categorical rejection of any attempt to destabilize the country, spread chaos, or incite hatred and division. We reject being drawn into the provocations of electronic disinformation campaigns driven by known actors aiming to threaten the security and social peace of our homeland. Such actions are tantamount to shooting ourselves in the foot.
