As part of the efforts of the Jordanian Women’s Union Institute (Tadamon) to provide legal assistance to women and empower them to access their rights, the association’s legal team successfully followed up on the case of a woman who survived domestic violence and had faced complex legal and procedural challenges that had previously prevented her from obtaining protection and justice.
The beneficiary had been subjected to severe violence and threats, forcing her to seek protection from the relevant authorities. She was subsequently placed in a specialized shelter for safety. Despite her persistent efforts to obtain legal advice from several organizations and human rights institutions with the aim of ending her marital relationship, the opinions she received unanimously concluded that pursuing legal action would be futile due to the complexity of her legal situation.
Driven by the association’s humanitarian and legal commitment, attorney Samar Al-Jabra, a member of Tadamon’s legal team, undertook a thorough review of the case file and supporting documents. She identified a legal avenue that could be pursued despite the previously negative assessments. This approach focused on addressing and correcting procedural issues related to the proof of marriage document.
Attorney Al-Jabra immediately initiated intensive efforts, beginning with coordinating with the beneficiary’s embassy to authenticate the necessary documents, followed by officially registering the case before the competent Sharia court. Through diligent coordination and persistent efforts, she succeeded in convincing the other party to attend the court session to acknowledge the marriage and consummation, while supporting the case with the witnesses and legal evidence required under due process.
These efforts resulted in the issuance of a Sharia court ruling granting annulment of the marriage through Khull (redemption-based dissolution). The ruling became final and enforceable, bringing an end to a prolonged period of legal and personal hardship that had hindered the woman’s safety, stability, and well-being.
Through this achievement, the Jordanian Women’s Union Institute (Tadamon) reaffirms its commitment to protecting women and survivors of violence and to removing obstacles that prevent them from accessing justice, based on its belief in every woman’s right to dignity, safety, and a decent life.
